Meet Our Medical Director
Colonel John R. Dorsch, DO (Ret)
Colonel John R. Dorsch, DO (Ret), is a board-certified emergency physician and expert in human performance optimization, specializing in cognitive resilience, recovery, and brain health. His career has been defined by a precision-medicine approach to optimizing performance in high-demand environments, integrating physiology, neuroscience, and operational experience to enhance both physical and cognitive function.
Over a distinguished 20+ year career in the United States Air Force, Dr. Dorsch served as the senior medical officer for Special Tactics and Pararescue, culminating as Wing Surgeon for the 24th Special Operations Wing. In this role, he directed medical support and human performance initiatives for elite Special Operations forces operating in some of the most demanding environments in the world.
Dr. Dorsch played a key leadership role in advancing the Special Operations Human Performance Optimization (HPO) enterprise—an integrated, multidisciplinary model designed to maximize cognitive performance, accelerate recovery, and build long-term resilience. His work focused on the intersection of neurologic health, stress physiology, sleep optimization, and recovery science, with an emphasis on sustaining peak performance under chronic stress and repeated neurologic strain.
Today, as Medical Director of the Fayetteville Brain Treatment Center, Dr. Dorsch applies these same principles to patient care. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of traumatic brain injury, post-concussive symptoms, and cognitive performance deficits, utilizing advanced neurotechnology within a highly personalized, systems-based treatment model. His approach is centered on restoring brain function, optimizing mental clarity and performance, and improving overall quality of life.
In addition to his work at the Brain Treatment Center, Dr. Dorsch remains active in clinical medicine and medical education as an emergency physician and EMS leader. He continues to advance the field of human performance by bridging elite military medicine with innovative, patient-centered care.
Clinical Philosophy
Dr. Dorsch’s clinical philosophy is grounded in a simple principle: the brain is central to performance, resilience, and overall health—and it can be optimized.
Drawing from decades of experience in Special Operations medicine, he approaches each patient through a performance-based lens, recognizing that symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, and decreased focus are often manifestations of underlying neurologic dysfunction rather than isolated problems.
Dr. Dorsch believes that recovery is not simply about returning to where a patient was—but enabling them to function at a higher level, with improved clarity, energy, and control.
His model of care is:
- Personalized – Every patient receives an individualized evaluation and treatment plan based on their unique physiology, history, and goals
- Systems-Based – Focused on identifying and addressing root causes rather than treating symptoms in isolation
- Technology-Driven – Leveraging advanced neurodiagnostics and therapeutic modalities to guide precision treatment
- Performance-Oriented – Not just restoring baseline function, but optimizing cognitive clarity, resilience, and capacity
Dr. Dorsch believes that recovery is not simply about returning to where a patient was—but enabling them to function at a higher level, with improved clarity, energy, and control.
“We don’t just treat symptoms—we optimize brain function, resilience, and performance.”
